Mt. Baldy, CA – After a tough windy day in Ventura, the peloton was afforded little relief, as Stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race Empowered With SRAM took the racers on a 49-mile sojourn from Ontario up to the summit of Mt. Baldy.
The race would remain mostly intact on the run up to Mt. Baldy, but once the peloton hit the slopes, the climbers showed themselves with some vigor. The Canyon//SRAM Racing duo of Kasia Niewiadoma and Omer Shapira, the South African, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (CCC-Liv), Clara Koppenburg (WNT Rotor Pro Cycling Team), Juliette Labous (Team Sunweb), Brodie Champman (TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank), and the pair from Boels Dolmans Cycling Team, Katie Hall and current race leader, Anna van der Breggen, separated themselves from the pack.
As the climb progressed from one switchback to another, only the trio of Moolman-Pasio and the past two winners of the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race Empowered With SRAM, Hall and van der Breggen, remained. With approximately 5 kilometers to go, the Boels Dolmans pair turned the screws a bit tighter gapping the game but tiring Moolman-Pasio.
Hall and van der Breggen would come to the finish line together, but it would be Hall taking the victory as van der Breggen raised her arms to celebrate her teammates hard fought win. Moolman-Pasio would hold on for third place.
For their efforts on the road, Labous would climb into the lead for the Tag Heuer Best Young Rider category, while Shapira took home the Amgen Breakaway Most Courageous Rider Jersey. Anna van der Breggen retained the yellow Amgen Race Leader for a second day, and Katie Hall would climb into the lead of the Lexus Queen of the Mountain Leader Jersey.
